Member of the Board of Directors  

The Eastern Catskills CLT (ECCLT) Board of Directors (Board), has the responsibility for governing the  organization. The Board is responsible for determining the organization’s policies and strategic direction, for  raising funds necessary to complete the organization’s work, for representing the organization to various  stakeholders and the community at-large, and for ensuring safe and sound financial management. Members of  the board will debate in many voices but will speak with one voice. 

Responsibilites:

Planning and Governance:  

  • Review and approve ECCLT’s mission and goals annually.  

  • Plan for ECCLT’s future, on a long-term and short-term basis.  

  • Decide and plan what projects and programs ECCLT will provide.  

  • Evaluate ECCLT’s programs and operations on a regular basis.  

  • Act at all times in good faith and in a manner that is in the best interest of ECCLT.

Finance:  

  • Faithfully read and understand ECCLT’s financial statements. 

  • Ensure financial accountability of the organization. 

  • Oversee an ongoing process of budget development, approval, and review.  

  • Set policies for managing and maintaining properties and investments.  

Human Resources:  

  • Select and support the Executive Director: review performance at least annually and provide on going assistance as requested by the Executive Director.  

  • Personnel Policies: set policy and procedures regarding salaries, benefits, grievance, and severance.

  • Volunteer Involvement: set policy regarding how the organization treats, recognizes, and celebrates  its volunteers.  

  • Board Development: recruit, orient, and provide onboarding support to new board members.

  • Participate in ongoing training, evaluation, and recognition of current board members. 

Fundraising:  

  • Participate in fundraising activities in a manner that matches the individual’s skills and abilities.

  • Participate in fundraising trainings to increase skill levels.  

  • Ensure adequate resources to achieve the organization’s mission and implement the organization’s  programs and projects.  

  • Personally contribute to the extent possible. 

Community Relations:  

  • Communicate, as requested, the ECCLT’s programs and services to respective representative bodies  (municipal government, homeowner/ lessees) 

  • Ensure that ECCLT’s programs and services appropriately address community needs, and are  inclusive of members of the wider Woodstock community and surrounding area.  

  • Promote ECCLT to the general public, including serving as an emissary to the community. 

  • Promote cooperative action with other organizations, including activities and occasions when the  organization should take part in coalitions, joint fundraising, etc.  

Resident Relations:  

  • Ensure that ECCLT’s programs and services appropriately address the needs of current and  prospective residents of ECCLT homes.  

  • Serve as a liaison or emissary to residents of ECCLT homes to keep them informed and connected  to the organization.  

  • Ensure that residents of homes on ECCLT land have access to programs that can assist them to be  successful homeowners or tenants.  

Operations:  

  • Ensure that ECCLT’s administrative systems are adequate and appropriate.  

  • Ensure that the board’s operations are adequate and appropriate. 

  • Ensure that the organizational and legal structure is adequate and appropriate.

  • Ensure that ECCLT and its board members meet all applicable legal requirements.  

Requirements for Board Services:

  • A demonstrated interest in providing sustainably affordable housing in a way that respects all  individuals and maintains our community’s character.  

  • Specific experience, knowledge or commitment in at least one area: Human Resources, Planning,  Finance, Fundraising, Community Relations, Resident Relations, or Operations.  

  • Skills, knowledge, or perspective necessary to provide a diverse mix on the Board of Directors. 

  • A commitment to expand knowledge or Board responsibilities through orientation and ongoing  training.  

  • A willingness to represent the organization to the community, as requested. 

  • A minimum of six hours per month, with opportunities enough for 12 or more hours per month. The minimum recommended commitment is distributed approximately as follows: 3 hours - Regular  monthly board meetings and preparation; 3 hours - Regular committee meetings and preparation 3 hours - Governance and fundraising activities

  • A commitment to participate in board fundraising activities and to make financial contributions to  the organization to the best of your ability.  

  • Ability and commitment to prepare for, attend, and participate in regularly scheduled meetings of the  Board of Directors.
